Amway Billy Florence - Americans On Government

Will Rogers humor is some of my favorite humor. I enjoy clean humor that is packed with wisdom and truth. Thank you Billy for sharing this...

Billy Florence, “Will Rogers had the unique ability to capture national character in a few powerful words. Rogers observations on government over-spending is a classic. He said that the closest our country has been to being even was on the day that Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. Treasury. It had a zero balance on that day."

Fred Harteis: Challenges Faced Provide Starting Points

Fred Harties shares some great perspective on challenges and goal setting. These leadership insights can be very helpful for Quixtar IBOs...

Fred Harteis: “John Dewey once wisely remarked that arriving at one goal is the starting point of another. William Bennett added to that thought with the comment he made below explaining the benefit of having the goal also be a challenge. His point is the development potential represented by goals or issues that could also be viewed as challenges and obstacles. You can see why this powerful topic is ideal for Bennett’s book of Virtues.”

Fred & Linda Harteis Favorite:“Give yourself an even greater challenge than the one you are trying to master and you will develop the powers necessary to overcome the original difficulty." - William J. Bennett - The Book of Virtues

Don Wilson - Words of Wisdom from World's Richest Man

You may not agree with everything that Bill Gates says or does. But he is a smart man. I don't think he ended up where he is by mistake. He made a lot of good choices and we can learn from him. I thought I would share some of his words of wisdom. Some of these have some good humor (and truth) to them...

Amway's Don Wilson - Bill Gates Word of Wisdom

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others."

"At Microsoft there are lots of brilliant ideas but the image is that they all come from the top - I'm afraid that's not quite right."

"Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one."

"I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act."

"I really had a lot of dreams when I was a kid, and I think a great deal of that grew out of the fact that I had a chance to read a lot."

"If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure."

Don Wilson - Controlling Your Debt

Personal consumer debt is a real problem for most American families. It takes discipline to get out of debt and to stay out of debt. It is important to understand that how much money you make is not the only answer. You see people from all income ranges getting in to debt. Certainly earning more income can help you reach certain goals much faster but more income doesn't always mean less debt. What you do with that income is what matters most.

This article I read offered some great tips on controlling debt. Here are a few of my favorite points:

Americans are loaded with credit card debt.

Get a handle on your spending.

Pay off your highest-rate debts first.

Don't fall into the minimum trap.

Watch where you borrow.

Expect the unexpected.

Don't be so quick to pay down your mortgage. (Pay off other debt first.)

This article made some other great points and went in to much more detail. If debt is a problem in your household, read this article. And most importantly put a plan in place to work your way out of it. It takes hard work to be debt free but it is worth the price.

The article can be read on the CNNMoney site:

Randy Haugen: Book Thoughts From Humor Is Tremendous

Humor is important. There are certain times during every person's life that they really need a good sense of humor. Randy Haugen shares some great thoughts on this...

Randy Haugen, “Smile! It increases your face value.” This is perfect word picture and an excellent thought nugget for reflective thinking.”

The first time, I encountered these deceptively simple words wasn’t during a movie or on television. It was in a book by Charlie “T” Jones. It’s a play on the words for the traditional investment definition of “face value.” Definition: The value of a security (bond) as printed on the front - or face - of the certificate. So, the comparison is that a smile makes our face more valuable to others. Perfect.

In his book, Humor is Tremendous, Charlie even provides book quips and quotes. Here are two of my favorites.

His books are selling like wildfire. Everybody’s burning them. – George DeWitt

A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. – Mark Twain.

Fred Harteis: Thanks To Veterans

We have many holidays throughout the year. Most Americans are just excited to have the day off of work. But we should also remember the importance of these holidays as Fred Harteis says so well here...

Amway/Quixtar's Fred Harteis: Celebration of Service

Fred Harteis: “Two of my thankful memories to our service people are May’s Memorial Day and the November‘s celebration of peace, Veterans Day. Each one reminds us that when we celebrate, we are remembering and recognizing the sacrifices of brave service people in the cause of freedom.”

Veterans Day - 1918 - It was on this day – the 11th day of the 11th month at 11 a.m. – that World War I came to an end. The Allied and Central Powers signed the Armistice in Marshal Foch’s railway car in the Forest of Compiegne, France. On May 24, 1954, Congress passed a resolution declaring November 11 “Veteran’s Day” – a national holiday to honor all of those who have served our nation in her armed forces.

Memorial Day – Was originally called Decoration Day as a commemoration of Civil War. In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. They chose Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Jim Janz: Russian Courage and Faith

Wow! I love this story. We can not take for granted the freedom that we have as Americans. What we do without much thought, others take great risk to do...

Jim Janz, “A great moment in modern history was remembered by then Vice President George Bush. In the battle for personal and religious freedom, it is impressive and inspiring.”

Jim Janz, Great Moments In Modern History
As vice president, George Bush represented the United States at the funeral of former Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev. Bush was deeply moved by a silent protest carried out by Brezhnev’s widow. She stood motionless by the coffin until seconds before it was closed. Then, just as the soldiers touched the lid, Brezhnev’s wife performed an act of great courage and hope, a gesture that must surely rank as one of the most profound acts of civil disobedience ever committed: She reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband’s chest.

Don Wilson – Creating Eternal Priorities

Don Wilson, “One of the things I respect about John Wooden is his focus on setting priority on what matters most. Coaching basketball was not a destination worthy of a life. He has other priorities.”

Don Wilson Nancy Wilson Quick Quote Favorite

I always tried to make clear that basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live. There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior. Until that is done, we are on an aimless course that runs in circles and goes nowhere. - John Wooden, Basketball Coach

Amway Bob Andrews - The Right Attitude

Having a great attitude and outlook on life is a major part of success. Some times things will go your way and other times it will feel like things aren't going your way. But having a great attitude can help you through those difficult times. These are a few great quotes on attitude...

Amway/Quixtar Bob Andrews - Attitude Favorites

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Everyone has his burden. What counts is how you carry it." - Merle Miller

"Always look at what you have left. Never look at what you have lost." - Robert H. Schuller

"I'ts not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life ;it is how you handle what happens to you." - Zig Ziglar

Joe & Mary Beth Markeiwicz - Courage To Push Through

Thank you Joe Markiewicz and Mary Beth Markiewicz for your teaching on pushing through fear. This is very powerful information you have shared...

"Do you have goals and dreams big enough that they cause a little fear? I hope you do. If you have something great you want to accomplish more than likely it will require you to stretch and push through some fears that you may have. Have courage. There is nothing wrong with having some fears. But don't let those fears keep you from moving on. When you have the courage to push through fears, you will be amazed at what you can achieve. Do the thing you fear." - Joe Markiewicz

Quixtar IBO Joe Markiewicz - Great Quotes on Courage

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt

"We could never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world." - Helen Keller

"If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream." - Martin Luther King, jr.

Amway/Quixtar Bob Andrews - Opportunities

Bob Andrews is right. Our American Free Enterprise system is amazing. We are truly blessed...

We live in a world with so many great opportunities. I certainly feel blessed as an American. The Free Enterprises system we have in this country has created endless opportunities for those who are looking and willing to learn and work hard.

Amway Bob Andrews - Favorite Opportunity Thoughts

"A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds." - Francis Bacon

"We are continually faced with great opportunities which are brilliantly disguised as unsolvable problems." - Margaret Mead

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein

Billy Florence: Historic Changes In Business

These two events have certainly been huge for American business. Thank you Billy Florence for sharing this...

Billy Florence, “Two business events of major importance from the past are the passage of NAFTA and what was happening at Microsoft 20+ years ago.”

1993 - The U.S. Congress approved the North American Free Trade Agreement on November 20. It took effect the following January. Under NAFTA the U.S., Canada, and Mexico become a single, integrated market with $6.5 trillion worth of goods and services traded annually.

1985 - Microsoft released Windows 1.01 on five 360kb 5.25 inch floppy disks. It ran on MS-DOS v5.0 (called “MS-DOS Executive” in Windows).

We now carry on small flash or travel drives more memory capacity than could be imagined in 1985.

Don Wilson: Stanford Wins Golf NCAA Championship

Congratulations to the Stanford Golf Team. They won the NCAA Championship. Stanford last one it back in 1994...

"Life works out in interesting ways, because all we did all year was try not to talk about the results, let's just worry about the stuff we can control," said Ray. "I think this team really bought into that, and were able to do that all year, and today it worked out again. It was a real gutty performance, and I'm real proud of the guys."

When asked about what ended up being the 13-shot victory after starting the day up only two, Ray credited both his players and the course.

"I think it's a testament to the golf course," he said. "This is just an awesome place to hold a championship like this, because it rewards good shots, but if you get too aggressive and greedy, it'll penalize you in a heartbeat. Our game plan all week was to play the percentage plays - hit it in the center green, take two putts, if you get a good look at a birdie knock it in, keep the ball out of the water on the par threes.

"We were really able to do that most of the week, and I think that's probably the reason we see the scores the way they are."

Quixtar's Joe Markeiwicz - Take a Shot

Very true what Joe Markiewicz shares here. I believe everyone struggles with procrastination to some degree. It is something we all have to work hard to fight. If we wait too long to jump on an opportunity, it could be gone...

Opportunity is around every one of us. During our lifetime, we all will have great opportunities come our way. Some we may not recognize. Some we will. But the real key is not recognizing the opportunity but taking action and doing something about it. Of course we should think and not jump at everything that looks good. But too many of us probably struggle with not taking enough action. Procrastination is a dangerous enemy of success. We can't wait forever to a take a shot.

I love the quote by Wayne Gretzky. It says it all!

Amway/Quixtar Joe Markiewicz - Action Quotes

"100% of the shots you don't take don't go in." - Wayne Gretzky

"Success is simple. Do what's right, the right way, at the right time." - Arnold H. Glasow

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

Amway/Quixtar's Randy Haugen – Business History Fact

It is always fun to learn the history of different terms we hear often like this one and know where it came from...

This fascinating business term has its roots nearly a century ago. – Randy Haugen

Randy Haugen Business History

The famous of the nation are still honored in New York by ticker tape parades. The time of real ticker tape is long gone. Wall Street operates electronically.

The first Ticker tape parade was first used in a parade to welcome the Prince of Wales to New York City in 1919. In those days Rolls of paper were used to record stock trades. As the paper rolled over pins that punched stock information read by stock brokers, it would leave holes. When a parade was organized, the shredded paper strips tape was scooped up and thrown out of windows on the parade passing below their windows.

As ticker tape became obsolete as new investing tools became available, it was replaced by a new product - confetti.
