Don Wilson Sports Highlights: UCLA Men's Tennis Team

UCLA has a great tennis program. They are looking strong again this year...

Don Wilson - College Sports Highlights

The sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team upped its record to 8-2 on the season on Sunday, downing No. 18 Texas A&M, 5-2 in a non-conference battle at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA began the day by taking a very close doubles point with victories at the top two courts. After an 8-4 UCLA win at court No. 1, Texas A&M answered back with an 8-6 decision at court No. 3. The Bruins ended up clinching the point at the No. 2 spot, where Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol defeated Matt Bain/Conor Pollock, 8-6.

The Bruins continued to take control in singles play, going up 3-0 in the match with victories at court Nos. 1 and 2. Abid was the first off at court No. 2, as he posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Texas A&M's Brad Williams. Fifth-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel wasn't far behind, downing Jerry Makowski, 6-2, 6-1 at the top position.

The Aggies eventually got on the board, as Bain was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over UCLA's Michael Look at court No. 6. The match was clinched just moments later, however, as Bruin senior Philipp Gruendler defeated Luka Ocvirk, 7-6(1), 6-4 at court No. 4.

In the final two matches of the day, UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine defeated Clay Donato, 7-5, 6-4 at court No. 5, while Pollock downed Surapol, 5-7, 6-3, (10-4) at court No. 3.

Orrin Woodward: Choosing The Positive Perspective

This is so true what Orrin Woodward shares here. It is all a matter of perspective...

Orrin Woodward, “Much of life is determined not by what happens to us but by how we look at it. While we often cannot control the event we can remain in control of our attitude.”

Orrin Woodward: Quick Leadership Wit and Wisdom

IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT

“A man pulled into a gas station on the outskirts of town. As he filled his tank, he remarked to the attendant, “I’ve just accepted a job in town. I’ve never been to this part of the country. What are people like here?

What are people like where you came from?” the attendant asked.

“Not so nice,” the man replied. “In fact, they can be quite rude.”

The attendant shook his head. “Well, I’m afraid you’ll find the people in this town to be the same way.

Just then another car pulled into the station. “Excuse me,” the driver called out. “I’m just moving to this area. Is it nice here?”

“Was it nice where you came from?” the attendant inquired.

“Oh, yes! I came from a great place. The people were friendly, and I hated to leave.”

“Well, you’ll find the same to be true of this town.”

“Thanks!” yelled the driver as he pulled away.

“So what is this town really like?” asked the first man, now irritated with the attendant’s conflicting reports.

The attendant just shrugged his shoulders. “It’s all a matter of perception. You’ll find things to be just the way you think they are.”

Don Wilson Sports Highlights: Wisconsin # 1

This will be a good game to watch between Wisconsin and Ohio State...

Get ready for another 1 vs. 2 showdown in the Big Ten - this time on the hardwood.

Wisconsin was the new No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 on Monday and Big Ten rival Ohio State was not far behind at No. 2.

The Badgers (26-2, 12-1), on top of the poll for the first time in school history, play the Buckeyes (24-3, 11-1) in Columbus on Sunday - just a bit more than three months after Ohio State and Michigan played a much-hyped 1 vs. 2 football game at Ohio Stadium.

Florida's 83-70 loss at Vanderbilt on Saturday snapped the Gators' 17-game winning streak and dropped them from the top spot in the media poll for the second time this season.

Wisconsin, which was No. 3 last week, leapfrogged second-ranked Ohio State to become the fourth No. 1 this season, and 52nd different school to hold the top spot in the history of the AP poll.

For the Big Ten, it's the first time the league best known for its football has had the top two teams in the AP basketball poll. The last time the same conference had Nos. 1 and 2 was last season, when the Big East had Connecticut at No. 1 and Villanova No. 2 in the second-to-last poll.

The last 1 vs. 2 game was also last season. No. 1 Duke defeated No. 2 Texas 97-66 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey on Dec. 10, 2005.

Orrin Woodward - Leadership Influence Is The Product

Leadership Observations from Orrin Woodward

George Burns said, “To be effective, a leader must have influence. But influence is a product of great leadership; it is not synonymous with it. You can have influence in a person’s life without leading him anywhere.”

Leadership is the influence of others in a productive, vision-driven direction and is done through the example, conviction and character of the leader.

Don Wilson - Staying Persistent

Persistence is a great quality. No matter what you do, you are going to face challenges. And the greater the reward at the end the greater the challenges you will have to face. So decide to be persistent in all you do. Don't be one to give up right away when things get tough. These are some great thoughts on persistence...

Don Wilson Quixtar - Persistence Quotes

"The secret of success is constancy to purpose." - Benjamin Disraeli

"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all." - Dale Carnegie

"I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen." - Frank Lloyd Wright

Orrin Woodward Leadership - Purpose Varies

Leadership Observations from Orrin Woodward

Many people are interested in leadership for what they imagine it can provide them, including:
1. Power
2. Control
3. Perks or Being Served.

But the life of a leader is quite different from such expectations. The life of a leader involves:
1. Giving power (empowering)
2. Helping others fix problems and move forward
3. Serving others.
