Don Wilson Sports Highlights: Florida's Coach

Florida's basketball program has been very good. It of course has a lot to do with the leader and coach, Billy Donovan. It seems there has been "talk" about Kentucky making him an offer after the season is over. But Donovan says he is only focused on UCLA which is the next game (as he should be)...

Kentucky officials are prepared to offer Florida coach Billy Donovan an annual raise of more than $1 million as part of a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball.

Sources close to Kentucky's search said the school is prepared to tender an offer to Donovan early next week, either after Florida is eliminated from this weekend's Final Four in the Georgia Dome, or after it plays Monday night for its second consecutive national championship.

When asked whether he has authorized anyone to negotiate with Kentucky on his behalf, Donovan said Friday, "Absolutely not. I have told our athletic director that I am focused on UCLA. What a great opportunity ... and there shouldn't be any distraction with any of this stuff."

The sources said Donovan, a former Kentucky assistant under Rick Pitino, is the Wildcats' top choice to replace Tubby Smith, who unexpectedly resigned last week to become Minnesota's coach. Kentucky's starting point in the negotiations will be a seven-year contract that would pay Donovan at least $2.8 million per season and as much as $3.5 million with performance-based incentives, the sources said.

Jody Victor & Kathy Victor: Security Business Note

This is great advice for any business owner who may be using temp agencies...

Jody Victor, “More people are using the options offered by temp agencies. If your growing operation requires use of temporary workers, we want to share this success solution found by a mortgage corporation. Some excellent people are entering or reentering the workforce via temp agencies. Make sure you take advantage of the background checks they can do for you.”

Jody Victor and Kathy Victor Business Note
Security Success Story: The more temps you use, the more vulnerable you are. Accordingly, mortgage corporation Freddie Mac requires temp agencies to run background checks on every temp they supply. Agencies must use a consumer reporting company chosen by Freddie Mac – and the temp agency must pay for every check itself. This strategy lets Freddie Mac operate more securely and also leverages its substantial outlay of funds for temps. If you’re committed to using temps, try to get your agency committed to you.

Billy Florence & Peggy Florence - Family Ideas

It will be interesting to see how this works. It does make sense. Thank you Billy Florence for sharing this with us...

Billy Florence, “Attempting to balance work and life is a major cause of stress in households. Addressing the issue of employee absences sometimes requires creativity. McDonalds is testing a solution in its British restaurants.”

Billy Florence and Peggy Florence: Family Facts Solutions

Fast-food giant McDonald’s is trying a unique way to reduce absenteeism and turnover in its British restaurants: allowing employees’ family members to sign on, via a family Contract, as co-employees who can cover absences. Surveys revealed that personal demands were prime causes of absenteeism. Employees often have trouble finding coworkers to fill in when they have to be absent, so the Contract allows them to draw on their most reliable resource—their families—to fill in as necessary. Results will be reviewed in the fall.

Fred Harteis & Linda Harteis: Customer Service Business Tip

While this article from Fred Harteis has to do with the hotel industry, you can apply the lesson to any business or industry. Customer Service is a very important part of running a business...

Fred Harteis, “Long term taking care of the customer is what keeps a company in business. In the hospitality business one way to stand out from the crowd is making the stay at your hotel something that can’t be easily copied. This successful case study provides an excellent business service example.”

Fred Harteis and Linda Harteis Business Case Study – Customer Service

A hotel wanted to offer its guests a special experience in every aspect of their stay. So each guest room is uniquely decorated by a different designer and a virtual tour of every room is online at the front desk so guests can pick the rooms they want. The final touch is small but telling. To update the ever-present mini-bar – and encourage guests to use theirs – the hotel staff stock it with the snacks that the guests themselves request when they check in. Every detail counts.

Randy Haugen - Pushing Through Fear

Randy Haugen is a great example of some one who was and continues to be willing to do things he fears. He has continued to expand his comfort zone by doing things which he did not want to do and even feared doing...

"We all face fears. Choosing to push through fears and get outside your comfort zone builds self confidence. Face your fears. Push through them." - Randy Haugen

Don Wilson - College Football News: Erik Ainge

Erik Ainge will be having knee surgery next week. He is a great quarterback for the Vols. I hope he has a great recovery...

Tennessee starting quarterback Erik Ainge will have surgery next week on his right knee to repair or remove torn cartilage, team officials announced Wednesday.

Ainge is out for spring practice, which began Feb. 22 and ends March 31.

The doctors will determine how to correct the problem once they begin surgery. Their choices are to remove his meniscus or repair it. Removal would mean a shorter recovery time of four to six weeks while recovery from repair would take between eight to 12 weeks but be "better for his long-term mobility," officials said.

The surgery is scheduled for Monday.

"I'm just glad we are able to take care of it," coach Phillip Fulmer said in a news release. "It's another advantage of starting spring as early as we started it because it gives us plenty of recovery time."

Ainge, who will be a senior this fall, set the school's single-season record for completion percentage last season at 67 percent, going 233-of-348 with nine interceptions for 2,989 yards and 19 touchdowns. He started all but one game last season because of a sprained ankle.

Don Wilson Finance: No to Co-Signing

I read this article that I wanted to share. It is from Kiplinger.com. It talks about why you don't want to co-sign for people on loans. This is important information to read and know. Many people will be asked or consider co-signing for someone during their lifetime. So it is important to know the facts about it...

Co-signing a loan can certainly affect your credit score and your ability to borrow money, even if the loan is always paid on time.

The loan you've co-signed for can show up on your credit report, just like any other debt you have. "Whatever the lender reports each month about the status of that account will be reported for each individual whose name is associated with the account," says Maxine Sweet of credit bureau Experian.

As a result, the loan you've co-signed for can increase the size of your outstanding debt -- added to your mortgage, credit-card balances, car loan or student loans -- when lenders are deciding whether to let you borrow more money. You might have a tough time taking out other loans if the lender decides that your debt-to-income ratio or balance-to-credit limit is too high -- even if the payment history is perfect.

Any late payments can show up on your credit report, too, sometimes without warning. Some lenders may notify co-signers and give them an opportunity to pay before reporting it as late but generally aren't required to give any notice. And if the borrower defaults on the loan, it can destroy your credit -- showing up as a default for you, too.

Orrin Woodward - Look At Results

I love what Orrin Woodward says here. It is really true. Where there are great results, you can know there is great leadership helping to make that happen.

Leadership Observations from Orrin Woodward

The level of leadership exhibited determines the results. Over time, where there are lackluster results, there is a leadership deficiency. Where there are stellar results, there is strong leadership. John Maxwell says “everything rises and falls on leadership.”

Don Wilson & Nancy Wilson - Effective Meetings

Don Wilson, “Time is a resource to be used effectively. Regular status meetings at a company can be shortened and more relevant if a little pre-planning goes in to it.”

Don Wilson and Nancy Wilson - Leading Meetings Well:

Keep Status meetings moving along:

Many status meetings take too long because of long-windedness, but others drag on because people are working too hard.

Inevitably, important issues are raised in the updates, and the meeting comes to a halt in order to discuss them. Instead, the leader (you) should table these topics until the reports are done, and then excuse everyone except those who need to discuss these issues. Meetings will finish faster, and those that don’t will have a clear reason for going on.
