Randy Haugen Business History

The famous of the nation are still honored in New York by ticker tape parades. The time of real ticker tape is long gone. Wall Street operates electronically.

The first Ticker tape parade was first used in a parade to welcome the Prince of Wales to New York City in 1919. In those days Rolls of paper were used to record stock trades. As the paper rolled over pins that punched stock information read by stock brokers, it would leave holes. When a parade was organized, the shredded paper strips tape was scooped up and thrown out of windows on the parade passing below their windows.

As ticker tape became obsolete as new investing tools became available, it was replaced by a new product - confetti.
