Fast-food giant McDonald’s is trying a unique way to reduce absenteeism and turnover in its British restaurants: allowing employees’ family members to sign on, via a family Contract, as co-employees who can cover absences. Surveys revealed that personal demands were prime causes of absenteeism. Employees often have trouble finding coworkers to fill in when they have to be absent, so the Contract allows them to draw on their most reliable resource—their families—to fill in as necessary. Results will be reviewed in the fall.
