Colombo DiSalvatore Example Is Best

Noman Vincent Peale -Leading by example is Leading Out Loud

Columbo DiSalvatore: Don, I know you've read many of the Norman Vincent Peale books. Do you have any favorite lessons or stories from them?

Don Wilson: Yes, I do, Colombo. One that comes to mind is the story he tells about his personal friend, JC Penny.

DiSalvatore: What leadership topic were they discussing?

Don Wilson: They were discussing problems that people encounter in life and what they do about them. Dr. Peale asked Penny, "What is your philosophy regarding problems?"

Colombo: I remember that Penny had serious problems to solve as he founded the JC Penny stores.

Don Wilson: He did. JC Penny was ninety-five years old and still speaking and helping other people. He said, "Actually, I'm grateful for all my problems."

DiSalvatore: That's not the normal reactions, Don. Did he say why?

Don Wilson: Yes, Columbo, that where the real wisdom comes in. JC Penny said, "As each of the problems was overcome I became stronger and more able to meet those yet to come. I grew on my difficulties."

DiSalvatore: That's a excellent example of leading by example or as we like to say "Leading out Loud."
